Le Panier goes green

Le Panier... A welcoming, cultural and atypical district. Forming a small village in the heart of the Phocaean city, it is also a highly historic site for the city. Archaeological digs have uncovered remains dating back to Roman and Greek times. The site where they were found, now listed, is preparing to host a project as atypical as the district in which it is located.

IL ÉTAIT UNE FOIS, LE QUARTIER DU PANIER

This project was born three years ago: a shared garden for the inhabitants of Le Panier. If you've ever visited the Panier district, you'll have noticed this island of unkempt grass, surrounded by high fences. It may not look like it, but over the centuries, this area has been home to numerous establishments that have served the life of the Panier. From the "Maison des pêcheresses" to the women's prison, from the hospital for prostitutes to the "asile provisoire départemental pour la vieillesse", it's a place steeped in history that stands bare today. With its ancient and Roman remains, but also a place steeped in contemporary history, it seemed essential to give meaning to this place today.

SHARING, EXCHANGING AND GREENERY

A project then took shape : to create a garden where the neighborhood's green thumbs could come in peace to enjoy a garden in the heart of the city. It's a way of encouraging exchanges between the people who will use this 750m2 green space, but also of offering a green space in the heart of this neighborhood, where houses with gardens are rare. A variety of trees, climbing plants and much more will be planted in advance, before the residents themselves can freely enjoy the shared garden, appropriating, each in their own way, this island of greenery designed especially for them. To safeguard the remains found during archaeological digs, everything is planned! Digging for planting will be supervised, and root protection film will be applied.

This project promises to be a wonderful opportunity for sharing and bonding in the heart of a place that asks only one thing : that each and every one of us contribute a little of our soul, to keep alive a history that goes back centuries.
