THE CALANQUE D'EN VAU AND ITS TURQUOISE SEA

calanque den vau

This is one of the most beautiful calanques in Marseille, but also one of the most remote in the Calanques National Park. Being able to swim in En-Vau is a well-deserved reward because to access it, you have to either hike or arrive by boat from the sea. Located in the Vaufrèges area, just before Port Pin calanque in the 9th arrondissement of Marseille, it is very narrow with high cliffs surrounding it. It is so steep that the sun warms the sea below very little, so the water is always quite cold. It is quite sheltered, which is very enjoyable because in windy weather, you will be protected. To access the calanque, it is advisable to put your flip-flops in your bag and wear sturdy walking shoes! Also, remember to bring something to drink, sunscreen, and a hat to avoid sunstroke.

Accessing En-Vau Calanque

Once equipped, if you start from Port-Miou calanque, it will take you about 1 hour and 15 minutes to cover the 3.5 km trail. From the La Gardiole parking lot, it will take you about 55 minutes to cover the 4.6 km through the Gardiole Forest. It is worth noting that if you start from Port-Miou, the trail is more challenging with elevation changes and numerous rocks. The path from La Gardiole, on the other hand, may offer a less beautiful view, but it is easier as it is less steep and without difficulties. It's up to you to decide if you prefer ease of access or the view! For those who still want more once there, on the left side of En-Vau, the Castelviel plateau offers some of the most pleasant wild landscapes for hiking. The place is also a recognized site for rock climbing. The viewpoints offer breathtaking panoramas and make you want to stop and breathe. The view of the crests of La Ciotat is absolutely stunning. You can also do Via Cordata or visit the calanque by boat, kayak, or paddleboard! For those who prefer paddling to walking, you can rent kayaks at the Port-Miou or Cassis calanques for the more adventurous and make your way to En-Vau by sea. Don't forget to bring your mask and snorkel so you don't miss the incredible underwater spectacle that En-Vau offers. Many species of fish swim in its paradisiacal waters for the delight of swimmers.

The calanque is bordered by forests, so you may sometimes see wild boars coming down to the beach to enjoy it among the bathers. The small pebble beach nestled at the bottom of the calanque offers clear and turquoise waters. At the top of the calanque, a viewpoint provides a magnificent panoramic view of the site, including a small rocky pinnacle nicknamed the "finger of God". While reaching En-Vau calanque can be challenging, it is also a victim of its success and is quite popular, especially among tourists. Many brave souls gather here. So, it's best to leave early, which is ideal anyway to avoid the summer heat.

It's also worth noting that the Gardiole parking lot is closed in summer to prevent the risk of fires. Make sure to check before you leave if access to the trails is permitted, especially during the summer months.
