MORGIOU, THE MARSEILLE DREAM, FROM THE CALANQUE TO THE FISHERMEN'S HUT

Well-known to fishermen, who spend their Saturday evenings there, summer and winter alike, the Calanque de Morgiou also delights tourists. They don't come here to search for fish to make bouillabaisse but to enjoy this little piece of paradise that seems timeless. It's the story of all the calanques, confidential corners known only to fishermen that have gradually become internationally renowned attractions. It's also the ideal spot for hikers. Garrigue, steep paths, and finally the reward: a small secret cove, turquoise water, and the famous song of the cicadas. In short, a taste of the Provencal way of life.

THE CALANQUE DE MORGIOU, AN INVITATION TO THE "DOLCE VITA" OF MARSEILLE!

A typical fishing port still in operation, the Calanque de Morgiou is located between the calanques of Sormiou and Sugiton in the Calanques National Park. It is narrow and deep, consisting of a fishing port, fishermen's huts, a bar-restaurant, and a petanque court! It's worth noting that around forty people live in Morgiou year-round. The calanque is accessible on foot from Luminy in an hour, or by car from the Baumettes district.

It is one of the most beautiful calanques in Marseille.

If you come by car, you will find parking in the marina, after the fishermen's huts. When facing the sea, you can go to the Calanque de Sugiton by taking the left path via a somewhat steep trail; the right path leads to Cap Morgiou. The water is turquoise, there are some small pebble beaches, and sports activities are available nearby. Much less known than the others, this cove is undoubtedly the wildest. The small beach of Morgiou is made of sand and pebbles. Difficult to access with its dizzying rocky walls, the hike from Sormiou is well worth it, but once you're there, you won't want to leave! Located between Morgiou and Sormiou is the famous Cosquer Cave containing prehistoric cave paintings.

Unfortunately, for safety reasons, access to the cave has been blocked! The Vertigo trail, on the other hand, will guide you along the Morgiou Ridge, offering you a breathtaking landscape! And for diving enthusiasts, it's the underwater scenery that will amaze you! In the port, you can observe the stone steps that were carved for the arrival of King Louis XIII. He came to witness a tuna fishing event in 1622, called "pêche à la madrague," named after the net used.

Don't hesitate to come and discover the turquoise waters of the Calanque de Morgiou, the authenticity of its fishing village, and the wild coast; you won't regret it!

HOW TO GET TO THE CALANQUE DE MORGIOU?

The starting point to reach the Calanque de Morgiou will be Luminy or the Baumettes. If starting from the parking lot of the Baumettes prison doesn't appeal to you, you can opt for the Luminy path, which is more pleasant. Whichever path you choose, expect about an hour's walk before laying down your towel. However, be sure to equip yourself with good shoes. Having already made the journey in flip-flops, I assure you the experience was not the most pleasant. As always in the calanques, consider the return journey! Which this time involves uphill climbing.
