Built in 1694, the mansion changed owners several times. After renting it to the Phocéens Club, Jules Cantini, a marble worker who owned the residence, donated it to the city in 1916 along with its collections so that it could be transformed into a museum, with a large part devoted to forming a collection of modern art. The museum opened its doors in 1936.
Initially, the exhibited works were those of modern Provencal painters, notably from the 17th to the 19th century. Among others, visitors could admire the works of Maurice Bompard, Jean-Antoine Constantin, Adolphe Monticelli, and Gustave Ricard.
