Monument to the dead of the army of the orient

On the Corniche, you can't miss this majestic monument. It's a must-see for all visitors heading to the Vallon des Auffes or Malmousque.
History of the monument to the dead of the army of the orient

The origin of the monument dates back to 1924: a competition was launched for the creation of a national monument in tribute to the soldiers and sailors who died in the Orient and distant lands. The selected project was by the chief architect of Bouches-du-Rhône, Gaston Castel, who was also responsible for the reconstruction of the municipal opera and the Baumettes prison. The work was finally inaugurated on April 24, 1927, by President Gaston Doumergue. Designed on the principle of a "portico in the sky", the statues and ornamentations evoke the fighters of the army and the air force, with female figures with massive wings symbolizing heroism.
The Monument to the dead of the army of the orient and its surroundings
You can't miss this monument in Marseille, rising on the famous Corniche Kennedy, by the sea, facing the Frioul Islands. An emblematic place for the people of Marseille, it evokes, as its name indicates, a tribute to the soldiers of the army of the Orient and distant lands. It's a must-see when strolling along the coast to visit Marseille, especially since the Vallon des Auffes is right next door.
It's a true "gateway to the Orient" that echoes the history of Marseille and thus holds a special, almost sentimental significance. The view offered is equally impressive. Benches allow you to sit at the foot of the monument. Did you know that the bench along the Corniche is the longest bench in the world, stretching for 3 km? Facing the sea, these benches invite contemplation and daydreaming. Watching a sunset from this spot is an unforgettable experience.
The Petit Train de Marseille will also take you to discover Notre Dame de la Garde with a guided tour during which you can admire the Monument to the Dead of the Army of the Orient. If you're up for the adventure, the ticket office is located at the Old Port!
