HISTORY OF THE VILLAGE

In the Middle Ages, the Templars owned an establishment known as the Chemin or Bastide de Fontanis.

This former Roman institution developed around its church before becoming the residence of the Counts of Provence in the 14th century.

In the 19th century, Barjols became the French tannery capital with its 24 tanneries and 19 tan mills. These ones only disappeared in the 1960s. These large buildings are now used as residences for a large community of artists.
