RATONNEAU ISLAND
Ratonneau Island is part of the Frioul archipelago. Stretching 2.5km long, it is connected to Pomègues Island by the Berry dike built in 1822. This Marseille island attracts many visitors in the summer season who seek to enjoy its small beaches. It's a pure delight for both locals and tourists looking to escape the noise of traffic and indulge in some true relaxation.
Some Historical Points

The first signs of life on Ratonneau Island date back to the Neolithic period. Then, in 49 BC, when the Romans invaded Marseille, their fleet anchored on this island. Later, in the 18th century, when the plague struck Marseille, Ratonneau was used to set up a quarantine for passengers and goods from ships. In the 19th century, a hospital was established there to receive people with contagious diseases, notably those afflicted with yellow fever: this is the Caroline Hospital.
Visiting Ratonneau Island

The interest of Ratonneau Island, as with the Frioul archipelago, lies in a complete change of scenery. A mineral landscape that gives the place an intense and mysterious aura. An ideal place for a family hike and to discover the little-known history of Marseille. Stretching 2.5 km long and 500 meters wide, it is connected to Pomègues Island by the Berry dike built in 1822. You can visit the Fort, the Cap de Croix Battery, the Caroline Hospital, or the Brégantin Fort. Several beaches and coves are accessible and will delight you with their turquoise water and views of our beautiful city of Marseille. We recommend snorkeling to admire the marine life around. Bars and restaurants are available for dining during your visit. Be careful in the summer: the island does not have shaded areas. So, remember to bring a hat, sunscreen, parasol, and plenty of water to avoid overheating.
Ratonneau Fort
Ratonneau Fort is the first place to visit on the island. Built in 1886, it is located on the highest point of the island. Several installations were never completed, and many remnants are to be seen.
Key attractions to admire:
- The entrance gate built of white stone, a remarkable installation
- Two ammunition shelters carved into the rock
- A 360° view of the island and Marseille
Caroline Hospital of Ratonneau
Built between 1823 and 1828, Caroline Hospital is located on Ratonneau Island. The hospital was named after the Duchess of Berry, and its construction was ordered to address several health concerns, including strict isolation in case of quarantine. Once completed, the site could accommodate 48 patients and 24 convalescents. The hospital remained in service until 1941. It is a true architectural gem that is definitely worth a visit. Today, the site is undergoing restoration by the ACTA VISTA association. It hosts numerous events, including the MIMI festival, held every year in mid-July and featuring many artists from diverse backgrounds.
