SUGITON AND ITS LANDSCAPES

Next to the Luminy university campus, in the Redon district, you will find the Sugiton calanque. It is accessible from a path starting from the campus of the Marseille university. The trail is open all year round except during the summer (from July to mid-September).

Before starting your hike in the Calanques National Park, remember to bring water bottles that you can fill at the parking lot fountain. Since the path can be a bit rugged at times, it's better to wear sturdy shoes rather than flip-flops. It will take you about 1 hour to reach Sugiton. Once you reach the Belvedere, which overlooks the high cliffs, you will have a magnificent view of the Morgiou calanque. The trail then splits into 2 parts: either a path that veers off to the left with an easily accessible trail that descends to the calanque but is a bit longer, or a marked trail with 3 red dots that is more difficult because it is quite steep, strewn with rocks and stones.

Sugiton and its pebble beaches

Once you arrive at Sugiton, you can admire the turquoise water and the wild landscape offered by the 2 small coves. You can lounge on their pebble beaches, which give you a direct view of the torpedo boat islet, located about ten meters from the shore. It owes its name to its shape resembling that of a military ship. If you're not afraid, you can jump from this rock, which has become a favorite spot for divers. Indeed, some walls offer a diving board at a height of more than ten meters. It is also a popular spot for scuba diving.

The Calanque des Pierres Tombées, located to the east of the calanque, is more difficult to access due to the risk of falling rocks. The place owes its name to rockslides from a high cliff. Access has been prohibited since 2006, after a block detached, killing a person. The municipality declines any responsibility in case of incidents at this location. Continuing your hike in the Marseille calanques, on one side, you will head towards the calanque de l'Œil de Verre and on the other, towards Morgiou.
