THE CALANQUE DE PODESTAT: A REAL JEWEL

podestat-marseille

In a pleasant and restful setting, a small pebble beach unfolds, surrounded by cliffs. A postcard-worthy scene, but wait a bit before laying your towel there. This is one of those cases where appearances can be deceiving.

SWIMMING NOT ADVISED

Don't be fooled by its emerald waters; while the scenery is idyllic, it's strongly advised not to swim here or go diving.

Indeed, the area is polluted by Marseille's main sewage collector, which has been dumping wastewater into the Calanque de Cortiou, 1.6 kilometers away, for years. Additionally, the seabed has been polluted by industrial exploitation of the calanque. Even though EDF assures that despite signs of pollution, the ecological state of the calanque remains satisfactory. Furthermore, during easterly winds, the odors of sewage will prevent you from fully enjoying the otherwise magnificent view offered by the calanque.

A CALANQUE WORTH VISITING FOR ITS MAGNIFICENT SETTING

Despite this pollution, it's still very pleasant to visit and lounge on the small beach. A small shaded cave located to the west of the beach will allow you to rest in the cool and fully enjoy the view. The closest parking lot is the one in Callelongue, which will lead you directly to Podestat. You can also depart from the calanque de Marseilleveyre or the Col de Sormiou via a trail along the sea, providing you with a direct view of the île de Riou. By continuing along the path through the Vallon de Podestat, you will reach the Walkyries viewpoint. However, be sure to wear sturdy shoes as the terrain is quite rough in places. And of course, always carry a bottle of water in your backpack, maybe even two in summer to ensure you stay well hydrated throughout this magnificent hike.
