Remnant of Marseille's maritime past, the rehabilitation of Hangar J1 is part of a vast project aimed at revitalizing and enhancing the city and its exceptional site.

HANGAR J1, A WITNESS TO THE HISTORY OF MARSEILLE

Built by Eiffel at the end of the 1920s to meet the high port activity, Hangar J1 is a witness to Marseille's history and 20th-century architecture. A long pier of 6,000 m² consisting of three levels of concrete slabs and columns covered by a metal frame, Hangar J1 has seen many boats docking, transporting goods or passengers transiting through the Mediterranean.

THE ESPLANADE J1 GIVES THE SEA BACK TO THE PEOPLE OF MARSEILLE

Marseille, driven by the desire to become the leading metropolis of the Mediterranean, has launched since the 2000s major projects to rehabilitate its maritime facade. Thanks to the relocation of port activities to the urban periphery, the new project of Hangar J1 renamed La Passerelle, will create a real land-sea connection, finally giving the seafront back to the people of Marseille.

Already converted into a cultural space, the J1 will become a vast exhibition complex open to the public of over 25,000 m² dedicated to relaxation, strolling and leisure activities. From a large shaded garden forecourt, a long walkway towards the sea will offer magnificent panoramas.

Numerous leisure activities will be accessible to all, offering water activities, sports and leisure activities, wellness-related activities, games, and shows around virtual reality and video games. Panoramic hotel, dining areas, gourmet halls, office or training areas, shuttle transit station to the old port, Hangar J1 looks towards the future for the many while remaining faithful to its history.
