Just a stone's throw from the Plage des Catalans, right in front of the statue of the heroes of the Army of the Orient, lies a small Provençal fishing village.

Nestled between two cliffs, resolutely facing the sea, the Vallon des Auffes presents an image of a time that seems to have stopped in the days of Marcel Pagnol. It is indeed one of the iconic places of Marseille. A unique, authentic, picturesque site, the adjectives abound for this little haven of peace, both so close and yet so far from the hustle and bustle of the city center. This is where you will find one of the most beautiful settings for dining in a restaurant in Marseille.

Vallon des Auffes: Marseille's "Dolce Vita"

Deeply connected to the sea and the fishing profession, down to its name, Vallon des Auffes derives from "alfa" (auffo in Provençal), which is a granule used to make ropes. In the 19th century, rope manufacturers established themselves here. With its brightly colored fishermen's huts, typical Marseille fishing boats called "pointus," and its equally traditional and renowned restaurants, Vallon des Auffes epitomizes the "Dolce Vita" of Marseille.

Access is via narrow stairs that wind down into the heart of the cove. The small port is filled with the ebb and flow of tourists on holiday in Marseille and fishermen. The terraces are bustling, and it's best to come in the morning to appreciate the tranquility (especially in summer). At the end of the quay, after passing under the viaduct, you can swim (although you should be careful of the boats, as it is still a port). For swimming in Marseille, it's better to go to the other side of the viaduct on the breakwaters where many young and old gather.

If you're planning to visit Marseille, Vallon des Auffes is a must-see and is therefore a must-stop during a stroll along the Corniche. Just beyond is Endoume with its coves of Malmousque, Fausse monnaie, which are absolute must-sees in Marseille.
