Church of Notre Dame des Accoules throughout History

notre dame des accoules

It is one of the oldest churches in Marseille. The Church of Notre Dame des Accoules stands in the district of the same name, right next to the Vieille Charité and the Panier district. Its origins are ancient and make it a true witness to the history of Marseille. Its name comes from its Gothic architecture in the shape of an arch.

Built on the site of a temple dedicated to Minerva, it was occupied by nuns as early as 1033, before experiencing periods of destruction and reconstruction. In 1060, the church was attached to the Abbey of Saint Victor. In the past, justice was administered in front of the church gates, which are now located in Place du Palais. Once again destroyed during the Revolution because it hosted political meetings, it was rebuilt shortly before the July Monarchy. Today, only the bell tower remains, overlooking an ancient tower. It is one of the oldest and most important vestiges of Marseille, as this bell tower sounded the alarm in the city and convened the City Council. The bell tower of Notre Dame des Accoules has been classified as a Historic Monument since 1964.

The courtyard and crypts are worth a visit. It is one of those places that symbolize Marseille and the historic district of Le Panier, the first settlement in the city.

If you feel like praying in Marseille, masses at Notre Dame des Accoules are held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings, and at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
