During the construction of the Centre Bourse, many archaeological discoveries were made. Remains from the Greek, Roman, and even medieval periods were found. It then became evident that a museum tracing the history of Marseille should be created. Thus, the Museum opened its doors in 1983, with the assistance of the archaeologist and anthropologist Alain Nicolas.
